Attach a soft brush, set your vacuum to the gentle setting, and sweep the entire surface in the direction of the fibers. You will see that the dust will immediately be removed and the pile of the fabric will be as good as new.
Under no circumstances should you rub a velvet fabric. Even if you need to remove a stain, do not rub it. Dampen a soft cloth with water and dab it locally on the stain.
Leather (i.e. the cloths we use to dry the car) is also an ideal choice for cleaning velvet.
